Talking About Trees (2019)
Dir. Suhaib Gasmelbari | Sudan | Documentary | 93 mins | Arabic, Russian and English with English subtitles A world without cinemas may seem unimaginable for many but that has been the reality of the Sudanese people for the past three decades. Talking About Trees follows four veteran filmmakers of the Sudanese Film Club in a bid to resurrect cinema and spectatorship. Presented through a raw observational gaze, with snippets of films made in their youth, director Suhaib Gasmelbari captures the somewhat childlike cinephilic obsession of the four men as they manoeuvre the political resistance. The filmmakers may find themselves with little agency, but Talking About Trees goes beyond personal despair in an attempt to look into the crystal ball—where the role of cinema might one day shape the nation’s politics and culture again.
