A Dark, Dark Man (2019)

Dir. Adilkhan Yerzhanov | Kazakhstan | Crime/Drama | 130 mins | NC16 | Kazakh with English subtitles

The investigation into the murder of a young boy in a rural Kazakh village is hastily heading for a foregone conclusion—a routine cover-up by the corrupt local police. But when a plucky and righteous journalist from the city arrives to follow the case, Detective Bekzat is forced to consider the facts and evidence. The truth begins to matter. This slow-burn crime-thriller, from one of Central Asian cinema’s most prominent voices, creates a contemplative and stifling atmosphere of injustice and violence, ironically set against the tranquil Kazakh landscape. Through the enigmatic morality and path of Bekzat, A Dark, Dark Man questions what greyness looks like in a black-and-white world.  Awards: Winner – Best Director (Asia Pacific Screen Awards) Nominee – Best Film (San Sebastián International Film Festival)
